Television actress Ushasi Ray aka Bokul impressed the audience playing the titular role in the recently concluded drama ‘Bokul Kotha’. Well, her last show recently went off-air and Ushasi has already bagged another TV serial.
She will be seen playing the character of Dr. Kadambini, the first female doctor who forced Calcutta Medical College to start admitting female students in British ruled India. With the help of Dwarakanath Ganguly, Kadambini followed her passion and went on to become a doctor, going against the conservative society.
Kadambini and Chandramukhi Basu were the first two female graduates of Calcutta University, too. Their achievement opened the door to other girls to pursue higher studies in the then society, where women were not allowed to pursue higher education. Anandi Gopal Joshi was another Indian woman who was a qualified western medicine practitioner along with Kadambini.
Kadambini’s effort was even appreciated by Florence Nightingale. In her book, ‘How India Wrought For Freedom’, Annie Besant also mentioned Kadambini’s achievement.
